This Slab of Seed will grow you 3 delicious heirloom smoothie green varieties:
- Ashley Cucumbers are an early variety and a prolific producer of medium size 30cm fruits that are darker than other cultivars. Resistant to downy mildew and other problems normally caused by humid conditions. It also grows well in containers. It was developed by the South Carolina Truck Experiment Station and was released in 1956
- Tasting note: Crisp & crunchy
- Tuscan Kale (lacinato) grows 60 to 90cm tall and has dark blue-green leaves with an "embossed texture". Its taste is described as "slightly sweeter and more delicate" than curly kale and "slightly bitter & earthy". The Tuscan variety is sometimes called "dinosaur kale" because its bumpy leaves may resemble what dinosaur skin looked like. Because of its taste, it has been called "the darling of the culinary world". The strap-like leaves are typically harvested from the bottom of the stem upwards. Tuscan kale dates to the 18th century in Italy and has been grown in Tuscany for centuries
- Tasting note: Nutty & hearty
- Magenta Spinach (is actually "Swiss chard" but South Africans call it spinach — which is actuallt a different plant variety). These plants have excellent yields of dark green leaves with bright magenta stalks and veining. Dark green leaves are slightly rumpled. It's unclear just how old chard is, but several sources mention Aristotle giving a shout-out to red-stalked chard around 350 BC, and that both his Greek colleagues and Roman counterparts revered it for its medicinal prowess. If you harvest leaves from the outside in, leaving the crown (small leaves in the centre) intact, you will be able to harvest this heirloom for months
- Tasting note: Vibrant & earthy
About Sow Delicious
In 2013, Vanessa Jacobs set out to find the simplest way to grow a garden fit for a foodie, giving people the opportunity to proudly plant a garden that is Sow Delicious! She came up with the idea for the ‘Slab of Seed’ which might look like a slab of chocolate, but is made from a special blend of organically enriched super-soil and infused with rare heirloom seed – the purest & oldest seed on earth which is also non-GMO. The slabs are handmade in a unique little chocolate factory in the heart of Eden in The Garden Route.
